Shane has been building whatever comes into his head since he was able to stack blocks. Then came hand tools and the corded drill, working up to the circular saw, and finally discovering the whole woodshop by middle school. Knowing how a tool works and what it can ‘do’ allows one to cultivate their design based on the merits of their toolbox. This is how Shane has always approached design. If you can’t figure out how to build it, how can you ask someone else to? 

Originally from Philadelphia, Shane moved to Eugene in 1995 and worked as a carpenter while attending the University of Oregon. He applied to the B-Arch program because he kept being told to “shut up and build it like the drawing. Somebody else already designed it. If you want to do that, you’ve got to become an architect.”

 So he did, eventually.

As a carpenter for 15+ years and the son of a commercial roofer, he was offered his first job in an architecture firm due to his field knowledge and waterproofing background.

 He came to Dustrud Architecture in the summer of 2015 to get into larger Multi-Family Housing projects which are a hallmark of the firm. He has predominantly focused on Construction Administration, working directly with the Build Team to achieve the design intent while staying within budget.

Sheet metal work is sadly what gets Shane stoked! Taught at age 14 to cite break profiles and flashings by his dad, he loves a good standing seam roof and a booklet worth of manufacturer’s installation details. A recent shining highlight was receiving his OWN COPY of the SMACNA Manual – a manual he is putting to extensive use as he meticulously crafts his own home.

 A decent woodshop and a loving wife and daughter get Shane through the tough times. He often wonders what he might do with his free time, were he to have any. But for now, he relishes in the satisfaction that most everything in his realm has been from his hand.
